Hi my name is Rob and I have been playing Corporate Lawn Bowls for 15 or more years. I started playing at Emu Point for a couple of years and then moved to Albany Club and have not looked back since. I was walking normally then but over the years have gone from a cane to a crutch to 2 crutches and then a wheelchair pretty much fulltime. Way back during 1995 I was told I had Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Rather than worry about this illness I have embraced it and made a very active positive life with MS. Part of that life has been annual corporate bowls event. We started as Great Southern Personnel. then became Bonndogglers followed by Jungle Fever. For the last 2 years Irritable Bowl Syndrome with our Yellow Shirts. We don't take our bowls seriously but several years ago we made it to the state finals in Safety Bay and the following year lost every game.
Last year I was using my wheelchair but transferring to the bowling green on crutches, I recall the Secretary of the club came to me one night and asked me how they could support me. At the time I said I was fine but astounded that in the 100 or so years of the club I was the only person to use a wheelchair. Fast forward to this year 2021/22. The club called and discussed options prior to the season, I was going to use my chair all the time and needed to bowl from my chair. The club have built a couple of ramps, one at each end of the green, which have been great. The ramps allow me to remain in my chair and bowl and then move to the other end of the green and do it again. the ramps are pretty epic, I could use a few around my house not to mention that I am bowling pretty well, we are 5 and 1 so far.
I would like to thank the Albany Bowling club for the support they have provided and for giving me the opportunity to continue doing something that I love.
